As soon as 1961, the drivers started to focus on the safety of the great Spa track and held a meeting in a prairie (picture-above) close to the paddock to discuss this matter, from left to right : Graham Hill (masked behind Jim Clark, standing), Tony Brooks, Jack Brabham, Olivier Gendebien, Innes Ireland, Wolfgang von Trips, Masten Gregory, John Surtees, Phil Hill, Jo Bonnier, Bruce McLaren, Stirling Moss, Richie Ginther and Dan Gurney with Peter Garnier, the Autocar magazine editor, as secretary.

Eight years later, the GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers’ Association) was officially created with the financial support of Lou Stanley (BRM) and another meeting was held at the Kyalami Ranch in 1969 in the presence of Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, Chris Amon, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Jacky Ickx, Jochen Rindt, Denny Hulme and Mario Andretti, as well as two masked and unidentified drivers.
