The 1968 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring was held in extremely wet and foggy conditions, and Scottish driver Jackie Stewart, racing with a broken wrist (!), won the race by a margin of four minutes in what is widely considered to be one of the greatest victories in the history of Formula One.
Picture above: John Surtees in his Honda RA301 V12, qualified seventh, but his race was over on lap 3, due to ignition problems.
Jackie Stewart – picture below passing the checkered flag in his Matra MS10 – described the conditions: “Visibility was so poor,… when behind someone, I am simply driving into this great wall of spray, and I’m driving blind.”
