Hill wins, Amon breaks…
The 1968 Mexican Grand Prix was held at the ‘Ciudad Deportiva Magdalena Mixhuca’ circuit on 3 November 1968. It was race 12 of 12 in the 1968 World Championship. The race was going to determine who was going to become World Champion, between Britons Graham Hill in the Lotus 49B-Ford and Jackie Stewart in the Matra MS10-Ford, and defending champion, New Zealander Denny Hulme in the McLaren M7A-Ford.
Picture-above: Chris Amon qualified his Ferrari 312 in second position (behind Jo Siffert’s Lotus), for the 1968 Mexican Grand Prix. No luck in the race for the New-Zealander, when he was forced to retire on lap 16, with a broken transmission. Amon was one of the fastest drivers on the grid during this 1968 seasons, but his pretty Ferrari let him down, seven times in twelve races…
Graham Hill (Lotus) won the race – a great consolation for Team Lotus, after the tragic death of their lead driver Jim Clark in a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim – and his second Drivers’ World Championship, after Stewart fell back to seventh after an engine problem with his Matra.
