Wingless

Jackie Stewart, the 1969 Drivers’ World Champion with Matra, had to be content with a Tyrrell-entered March in 1970, but the great Ken was secretly preparing his own single seater, the 001, in his wood merchant workshop in Sussex.
The car first appeared in a non-championship race, the Gold Cup at Oulton Park on Aug 22nd, and it was then brought to the Italian Grand Prix at Monza where Stewart tested during free practice a wingless version, without any aerodynamic element.
As the car was not yet sorted out, Stewart reverted to the March without any wing, the lack of downforce sending him into a controlled oversteer in the Parabolica, exactly where his friend Jochen Rindt had his fatal accident in qualifications… You said bravery?
