At the 1980 US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, Bruno Giacomelli was all week-end on top of his game at the wheel of his Alfa Romeo 179: after capturing a fantastic pole at an average speed of more than 180 km/h, the little Italian was leading the race from the start with authority, until lap 31 when his V12 Alfa Romeo engine suddenly stopped, because of electrical problems.
The former Formula 2 European champion did never really recover from this unlucky race and after two more difficult seasons with Alfa, went to Toleman in 1983, without much success. He then tried his luck in the original Life (picture-below) that was powered by a W12 engine in 1990, but did not succeed to ever qualify the car…
