Unusual: Niki Lauda (at the wheel) and Jody Scheckter shared this Lucky Strike Racing March 73S BMW M12, at the 9 Hours of Kyalami in 1972 (picture above). Both young drivers, future World Champions, were yet to make a name for themselves in F1. The race, held on the Kyalami International Grand Prix Circuit, was round 1 of the South African Springbok Trophy Series.

The Scuderia Ferrari had entered two 312 PB’s for Ickx-Redman and Regazzoni-Merzario and were the clear favourites as modest competition came from Chevron and March cars, entered by local teams such as Team Gunston and Lucky Strike Racing.

In the race, the #1 Ferrari 312PB of Ickx and Redman suffered an engine failure and the sister car, driven by Regazzoni and Merzario took an easy victory (picture below), leading the Team Gunston Chevron B21/23 Hart driven by Gerry Birrell and Jochen Mass by 6 laps. Jody Scheckter and Niki Lauda brought their Lucky Strike March 73S-BMW home in fourth,… 35 laps behind the winners.
