Gilles Villeneuve’s first European race was the 1976 Pau F2 Grand Prix, and not the 1977 British Grand Prix, when he raced a McLaren for the first and only time and impressed so much, before being snatched by Enzo Ferrari.

At this 1976 Pau Grand Prix indeed, Gilles was entered by Ron Dennis’ Project Four team in this March 752 Hart (picture above), but after qualifying in tenth position, Villeneuve was forced to retire with an overheating engine after 13 laps. René Arnoux dominated the race in a Martini MK19 Renault (picture below), finishing 42 seconds (!) ahead of Jacques Laffite in a Chevron-BMW. All the others, were one lap down and more.
