That day!

Finally equipped with a reliable and powerful engine, the Cosworth DFV V8, Bruce McLaren and his team could dream of aiming for Grand Prix victory. This became a reality on June 9, 1968, when Bruce led the pack of competitors down the steep slopes of the Grand Francorchamps circuit, seen here on the Masta descent ahead of the BRMs of Pedro Rodriguez and Piers Courage (top photo).
On the morning of the race in the photo below, the boss (in a tie!) held a briefing with his small commando consisting of his teammate Denny Hulme, the engineer Gordon Coppuck, the mechanic Tyler Alexander and the manager Alastair Caldwell who is partly hiding Leo Mehl, the head of Goodyear, one of whose technicians is checking the pressure of a tire.
57 years later, McLaren is still winning, and by a long shot: it is the finest tribute paid to the New Zealand pioneer, who died too soon after being killed during private testing at Goodwood in 1970.
