Seeing John Surtees at the wheel of his Honda RA300 at the 1967 Mexican Grand Prix, inspired Japanese race car driver Taki Inoue to one day become a Formula One driver.

Taki Inoue: “I was a very young kid from Kobe in Japan and I remember seeing this picture of a Honda F1 car from 1967 in a magazine, I started to dream to be a F1 driver. Thank you John Surtees for the dream.”

The Japanese driver succeeded to reach Formula One, took 18 starts in 1994 and 1995 with Simtek and Footwork, but failed to make an impression. After a brief switch to sports cars, he retired from racing at the end of 1999 and now manages drivers in his own country.

The Honda RA300 was introduced towards the end of 1967. It retained the same V12 engine as the preceding RA273 car and the chassis was designed by Lola’s Eric Broadley and Honda’s Yoshio Nakamura. This collaboration resulted in the machine being dubbed the “Hondola” by the motorsport press.
