Kyalami, first time

The 1967 South African Grand Prix was held at Kyalami on 2 January  1967. It was race 1 of 11 in the 1967 Formula One World Championship. It was the first time, and it would be the case for many years, this circuit was used for the South African Grand Prix. 

Picture above: Denny Hulme in the Brabham BT20-Repco led a Formula One race for the first time, at the 1967 South African Grand Prix. For the New-Zealander, it was the start of a very successful campaign, that would ultimately earn him the Drivers’ World Championship. Here at Kyalami, he finished in fourth, after leading for most of the race.

There were some changes in the driver line-ups compared to the previous season: John Surtees was driving for Honda, Graham Hill had switched to Lotus, his place at BRM was taken by Mike Spence and Pedro Rodriguez was on trial for Cooper.

The 80-lap race was won by Mexican Pedro Rodriguez, who took the first of his two Grand Prix victories in a Cooper-Maserati, after starting from fourth position. John Love, who could have won, finished second in a privately-entered Cooper-Climax (picture-below) and Honda driver John Surtees came in third.
