Danny Ongais submitting the Interscope Porsche 935 to his will. He, Hurley Haywood and Ted Field won the 1979 Rolex 24 at Daytona by… 49 laps! The Hawaiian, nicknamed “Danny-on-gas”, confirmed his legend; his driving always spectacular, always on the limit, as seen here-above.
The 1979 24 Hours of Daytona were the first round of the World Championship of Makes, and were held on 4th of February 1979. The Interscope Racing Porsche 935/78 of Ongais-Haywood-Field fended off an early challenge of the well-driven Dick Barbour Racing and Gelo Racing Team-entered similar cars, and won the race from the surprisingly fast and reliable Ferrari 365 GTB/4 of Morton-Adamowicz (picture below).
