The 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans took place on 22 and 23 June. Favourites for the overall victory were: Jaguar, Peugeot and Sauber Mercedes, with Porsche and Mazda as outsiders.

Team Sauber Mercedes entered three cars, for a mix of seasoned racers, teamed with some talented juniors: #1 for Jean-Louis Schlesser, Jochen Mass and Alain Ferté, #2 driven by Karl Wendlinger, Michael Schumacher, Fritz Kreutzpointer and #32 for Jonathan Palmer, Stanley Dickens, Kurt Thiim.
All favourites ran into trouble in the race, and the Mazda 787B of Volker Weidler (D), Johnny Herbert (GB) and Bertrand Gachot (B), took a surprising, but well-deserved victory. It was the first Japanese car to ever win Le Mans (picture below).
