Sad to hear the passing of Danny Ongais, at the age of 79. Nicknamed “the Flyin’ Hawaiian” or “Danny On-gas”, he was a flamboyant and fearless race driver, and a gentle and discreet person in private.
Picture above: Ongais, giving it all, as usual, in his Shadow DN-9 at the 1978 US Grand Prix West, at Long Beach.
Danny Ongais participated in six Formula One Grand Prix in 1977 and 1978, qualified four four of them, in a privately-entered Ensign, Penske and Shadow. Best result, 7th in Canada.
He won six IndyCar (USAC) race in 1977 and 1978 in a Parnelli VPJ6B. He is seen, picture here-under, in his flamboyant racing style, in the Brands Hatch USAC race in 1978.
