The 1956 Monaco Grand Prix was held on 13 May 1956. It was race 2 of only 8 in the 1956 World F1 Drivers’ Championship. Juan Manuel Fangio took pole position in his Ferrari, but Stirling Moss took a dominant win in his Maserati 250F (picture above).

Moss, starting from the middle of the front row, in between Fangio and Castellotti (picture below), took the lead at Gasworks on the first lap, led every lap (100 laps!) and was never caught.

Exceptionally, Fangio was not having a good day. He hit the straw bales on lap 2, causing Schell (Vanwall) and Musso (Ferrari) to retire when trying, in vain, to avoid him.

On lap 54 while second, Peter Collins came in the pit and turned his car over to Fangio (it was allowed back then). He resumed in third, passed Behra (Maserati) for second on lap 70 and start closing in on Moss. Six second separated the two at the finish line.

Stirling Moss, who drove a faultless race, thus took a well deserved victory. Second were Collins and Fangio, followed French driver Jean Behra, who finished a lap down.
