Michael Schumacher inspects his in the tunnel stricken Benetton B193-Ford during practice for the 1993 Monaco Grand Prix (picture-above). Nevertheless, the brilliant German qualified on the front row, just 0.6s shy of Alain Prost’s Williams FW15-Renault, with Ayrton Senna third in his McLaren MP4/8-Ford.

The Benetton B193 was designed by Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne, had a carbon fibre monocoque and was powered by the latest Cosworth HBA engine in an initially exclusive deal with Ford, and ran on Goodyear tyres. It was driven by Michael Schumacher and Riccardo Patrese (picture-below). Schumacher won the 1993 Portuguese Grand Prix at its wheel.

Schumacher led the Monaco race comfortably, but suddenly slowed down with a hydraulic problem on lap 33 and retired in a cloud of smoke at Loews. After an eventful race, Senna won for the sixth time in the Principality, Damon Hill (Williams) was second and Jean Alesi third in his Ferrari.
