The Stuttgart-based constructor has often shined in the USA in Can-Am and IMSA, but never in open-wheel racing. The attempt to participate at the 500 Miles of Indianapolis in 1980 with this spectacular Porsche 940 (picture above), entered by Interscope Racing for Danny Ongais, failed when the scrutineers of the USAC, assigned an inferior turbo pressure to the 935-inspired six cylinder engine, than allowed to its competitors.
Ten years later, Porsche appeared again in IndyCar, but the chassis tested by Al Holbert was not competitive and decision was taken to enter a March 89P powered by a Porsche engine for Teo Fabi (picture below), winner at Mid-Ohio, a short-lived success.
