Superb picture here-above of a front row of future champions: Niki Lauda in his March 722-5 on the front row of the 1972 European Formula 2 Championship round at Thruxton, with François Cevert and Ronnie Peterson next to him. Scot Gerry Birrell is just behind on the second row.

Ronnie Peterson and Niki Lauda were the official March drivers in both Formula 2 and Formula 1 championships in 1972 and so drove for the STP-backed works F2 team, managed by Ray Wardell.

The season started well with Lauda winning at Thruxton and finishing second at Mallory Park, but the team was distracted by the problematic development of the March 721X in Formula One, and the F2 championship went to Mike Hailwood (picture below) in a works Surtees with Lauda finishing fifth in the standings.
