This photo-finish of the two Matra 670’s at the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours, could make you believe in a sprint finish (picture here-above), but no less than eleven laps separated the winners, Graham Hill and Henri Pescarolo and the second placed pair, François Cevert and Howden Ganley, who scored a resounding double for the French constructor.

Raced in wet conditions, this edition was marked by a cascade of retirements: the top 10 being completed by the Porsche 908 of Joest-Casoni and the Alfa 33 of Vaccarella-de Adamich followed by five Ferrari 365 GTB4 (amongst them the one of Andruet-Ballot Lena winner of the GT class) and the first of the Touring catégorie, the Ford Capri 2600 RS of Bougoignie-Birrell (picture here-under).
