The arrival of the Renault engines in 1992 at Ligier improved matters for Thierry Boutsen a little (after a horrible year 1991 aboard the heavy and uncompetitive Ligier-Lamborghini) and in his final race for the team, at the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide, he scored a fine 5th place, his first points since leaving Williams, a team with whom he had scored three Grand Prix victories.

Nigel Mansell, already crowned 1992 World Drivers’ Champion, took pole position on Saturday afternoon. The most significant moment of the race was a collision between Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell as the Brazilian attempted to overtake the Englishman, eliminating both drivers.

Gerhard Berger (McLaren-Honda) won the race from Michael Schumacher (Benetton-Ford) and Martin Brundle (Benetton-Ford). Thierry Boutsen (picture below), qualified a distant 22nd, but drove a steady race to finish fifth, a lap down.
