In 1960, at the age of 26, John Surtees switched from motorcycles to cars full-time, making his Formula 1 debut racing in the 1960 BRDC International Trophy at Silverstone for Team Lotus. He made an immediate impact with a second-place finish in only his second Formula One race, at the 1960 British Grand Prix, and a pole at his third, the 1960 Portuguese Grand Prix.
John Surtees raced in Formula 1 from 1960 to 1972 for the Lotus, Cooper, Lola, Ferrari, Honda, BRM, McLaren and Surtees teams. He participated in 113 (111 starts) Grand Prix week-ends, won six races, 24 podiums, 8 pole positions and 11 fastest laps. And above all, he’s the 1964 Formula One World Drivers’ champion in a Ferrari (picture below).
