Janet Guthrie (born 7 March 1938) from Iowa City in the USA, is a retired professional race car driver and the first woman to qualify and compete in the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500, both in 1977.
Guthrie, who was originally an aerospace engineer, raced in three Indy 500, in 1977, 1978 and 1979 with a best result of 9th in a Foyt-entered Wildcat in 1978.
“Racing takes everything you’ve got,” said Janet Guthrie – “intellectually, emotionally, physically – and then you have to find about ten procent more and use that too.”
She’s also the first woman to ever lead a lap in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series (picture below) and she scored 5 top tens in three years in this series, with a best finish of 23rd in 1977.
