“Give a man a Lucky” was written in large letters on the grandstands, at the time where tobacco advertising was allowed. So, this must be the drivers’ briefing (picture above) ahead of the 1973 South African Formula One Grand Prix, at Kyalami. Historically, Lucky Strike was the main sponsor of the event, held early in the season.

From left to right one can recognise: Peter Revson, a McLaren driver who was going to win two Grand Prix that year, then François Cevert and Jackie Stewart the Tyrrell drivers and title contenders for sure, then Niki Lauda who bought his way into the BRM team and was going to impress, and finally Emerson Fittipaldi, the reigning Lotus Formula One World Champion.

The race was won by Jackie Stewart driving a Tyrrell 006, ahead of Peter Revson in a McLaren M19 and Emerson Fittipaldi at the wheel of his Lotus 72E. Oddly, when you know his fantastic career, Denny Hulme’s pole position in his Yardley McLaren M23 (picture below) was the only one in his Formula One career.
