Chris Amon (1943-2016) was a New Zealand racing driver. He was active in Formula One and in sports-cars in the 1960s and 1970s, and is widely regarded as one of the best F1 drivers never to win a championship Grand Prix.
The 1972 French Grand Prix held at Charade tells the whole story: Chris Amon (Matra MS120) takes pole position and fastest lap in the race, averaging 166km/h, a record that still stands. No luck in the race however, a slow puncture slows him down and he finishes third.
