The 1973 South African Grand Prix saw one of the greatest acts of heroic bravery seen in the history of Formula One. Watch video, a must!
Indeed, Mike Hailwood was recognised for bravery when he went to pull Clay Regazzoni from his burning car, after the two collided on the second lap of the race.
Hailwood’s driving suit caught fire, but after being extinguished by a fire marshal he returned to help rescue Regazzoni, who was still unconscious in his BRM, and succeeded to free him from the raging fire (again, please watch video) and thus save his life.
An act for which he was awarded the George Medal, the second-highest gallantry award that a British civilian can be awarded. Very modest, Hailwood tells us how it really happened.
