What a banking!
Dan Gurney finished 2nd in his Ferrari, in his second ever Grand Prix, at the 1959 German Grand Prix held at the AVUS. This photo-above shows, without any photographic trick, how steep the banking really was, as it was constructed at a 44 degrees angle.
The 1959 German Grand Prix was a Formula One race held at the Avus close to West-Berlin on 2 August 1959. It was race 6 of 9 in the 1959 Formula One World Championship. It was only the second time the race was not held at the Nürburgring. Avus had previously held the original German Grand Pris back in 1926.
In a unique race format, two heats of 30 laps of the 8 kilometres circuit, first, second and third were all claimed by the Scuderia Ferrari. British driver Tony Brooks was declared the winner ahead of Americans Dan Gurney and Phil Hill. All three drove Ferrari Dino 246s.
I think this is in this race Hans HERMANN had his terrific crash…
