Jackie Stewart (Matra-Ford) and Jacky Ickx (Ferrari) share the front row of the 1968 French Formula One Grand Prix, held on the Rouen-les-Essarts circuit, with poleman Jochen Rindt (Brabham-Ford #2) on the foreground (picture above).

The 60-lap race was won by Ferrari driver Jacky Ickx, 23 years old only, after he started from third position. It was the first Grand Prix victory for the talented Belgian, who dominated the race in pouring rain.

It was a sad victory though, as French driver Jo Schlesser (picture below), in his first Grand Prix start, had a fatal accident on the second lap of the race, when he lost control of his Honda RA302, which overturned and immediately caught fire, due to its chassis being partially built in magnesium.
