Thirst for victory

Qualifying was extremely wet and Jackie Stewart (Tyrrell 003-Ford) claimed a stunning pole position over a second ahead of his front row companion Jacky Ickx (Ferrari 312B). The Scot shot into an immediate lead from fast-starting Siffert (BRM) and Ickx. Stewart gradually extended his lead over Peterson who was impressive in his March 711-Ford and won the race despite being ill from fumes leaking into his cockpit.
The Tyrrell 003-Ford was designed by Derek Gardner for Team Tyrrell and used in the 1971 and 1972 Formula One seasons. The 003 was effectively the same as the Tyrrell 001 with a redesigned nose section, longer wheelbase, and narrower monocoque. Jackie Stewart claimed his second (of three) world championship at its wheel in 1971.
