Belgian Jacky Ickx and Swiss Clay Regazzoni were the two lead drivers at the Scuderia Ferrari in Formula 1 in 1972 (picture above). Ferrari fielded a revised 312B2, designed by Mauro Forghieri,  with a more conventional rear suspension, but could not keep up with the progress of the competition, like Colin Chapman’s more advanced Lotus 72, and dropped to fourth position at the end of the year.

Jacky Ickx convincingly won the 1972 German Grand Prix at his favorite track, the Nürburgring (picture below), but this was to be his 8th and last Grand Prix win of his F1 career and he finished 4th in the drivers’ standings. Regazzoni, had an even more difficult year, he scored only two podium finishes all season and finished 6th in the drivers’ championship.
