American Phil Hill made his Formula One debut in the 1958 French Grand Prix at Reims, driving a Maserati 250F and he finished seventh. Picture above: Phil Hill in his Ferrari 246 F1, at Monza 1958 where he finished third.

For the second half of the 1958 season, Hill moved to the Scuderia Ferrari, and aboard his Ferrari 246 F1, scored two podiums in Italy and in Morocco, with two fine third place finishes.

That same year, paired with Belgian Olivier Gendebien, Hill became the first American winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (picture below) with Hill driving most of the night in horrific rainy conditions.
