One chance only

Stephen South is a former racing driver from England. He won the 1977 Vandervell British Formula 3 championship and was considered as a good prospect for a Formula 1 career.

In 1979, he finished 6th (picture right) in the European Formula 2 championship and got one chance to prove his worth in F1.

Indeed, his only Formula One entry was at the 1980 United States Grand Prix at Long Beach with McLaren, standing in for the injured Alain Prost, but Stephen South failed to qualify.

Sadly, his career was ended later that year when he was involved in a terrible crash (he lost part of a leg) during practice for a Can-Am race at the Circuit Trois-Rivières in Quebec, Canada.

He is seen here at Long Beach, with team boss Teddy Mayer, preparing for qualifying.
