Monza fever
Ludovico Scarfiotti became the first Italian in 15 years to win the Italian Grand Prix, when he drove his Ferrari to a track record speed of 220.2 km/h average at the 1966 event held at Monza (picture above and under). Scarfiotti is also the last Italian to win it.
Scarfiotti, driving a Ferrari 312 in his only Grand Prix victory, led home his British team mate Mike Parkes by five seconds, to score a fantastic one-two for the Scuderia Ferrari on home soil. Parkes only just defeated New Zealander Denny Hulme in his Brabham BT20, the pair separated by less than half a second!
Jack Brabham was crowned 1966 World Champion that day, despite being stopped by a fuel leak. His third crown, and the unique achievement of becoming world champion in a car of his own make.
