Le Mans 1973. Matra withdrew from Formula 1 to concentrate on contesting the World Championship of Makes against Ferrari. It ‘s new long tail MS670B was made lighter, more aerodynamic and the V12 engine was tuned to put out 450 bhp.

For the Le Mans 24 Hours, Matra added two cars to their regular Championship team, to field a total of 4 cars in an all-French line-up. François Cevert (picture above) and Jean-Pierre Beltoise were constantly the quickest pairing but pushed their car (too) hard.

François Cevert (picture above) and Jean-Pierre Beltoise are regularly the fastest pairing, but have the tendency to push their car a little bit too close to the limit. The will be forced to retire.

Henri Pescarolo and Gérard Larrousse (picture below) drove with endurance in mind and won the race in front of the works Ferrari of Merzario and Pace.

A third 670B was prepared for Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Jean-Pierre Jaussaud who finished 3rd, while Patrick Depailler and Bob Wollek shared an older MS670 but had to retire.
