Graham Hill’s iron-willed determination, fierce pride and great courage enabled him to overcome the odds against more naturally gifted drivers. But make no mistake, the popular moustachioed extrovert, who loved the limelight, was supremely gifted, and soon became one of the first Formula 1 media stars.

During his brilliant career, Graham Hill won two Formula One World Championships in 1962 and 1968 and 14 Grand Prix between 1962 and 1969. He triumphed in the Monaco Grand Prix five times: in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968 and 1969 (picture-above), a record that held for 24 years and that earned him the nickname “Mr. Monaco”.

Outside Formula One, Hill entered the 24 Hours of Le Mans 10 times and won the great race in 1972 alongside Henri Pescarolo driving a Matra MS670. He also entered the Indianapolis 500 three times from 1966 to 1968 winning the Borg-Warner Trophy at his first attempt. In doing so, Hill became the first – and to this date, only – driver to complete the Triple Crown of Motorsport with wins in Indianapolis, Le Mans and Monaco (picture here-under in 1968).
