In 1993, Mario Andretti was driving a Lola for the Newman-Haas team and became at 53, the oldest driver ever to win an IndyCar race, when he won at the Phoenix Raceway. It was Mario’s 52nd and final IndyCar victory. It was also his 100th career win.
Rookie Nigel Mansell (the 1992 F1 World Champion) arrived at Phoenix anticipating his first open wheel oval race, but crashed during practice and sat out with a back injury. The Brit went on to win the championship with five victories. Andretti (picture below) finished sixth in the standings.
