At the 1987 British Grand Prix held at Silverstone, Nigel Mansell scored one of his most stirring victories, the highlight of which was his famous pursuit and pass of Williams team-mate Nelson Piquet at Stowe (picture above), having made up 29 sec in 28 laps after a tyre stop. He broke the lap record 8 times!
A knowledgable spectator, Neil Randon, saw it all: “I was there that day watching on the inside of Stowe. Took a photo. What a great day! Mansell was taken round the track on the back of a motorbike afterwards to wave to the crowd and he stopped at the point where he made the pass on Piquet. He knelt down and kissed the tarmac.” An emotional moment.
