The 1984 Portuguese Grand Prix was held at Estoril. It was the last race of the season and Niki Lauda needed second place to secure the title, and gained it when Nigel Mansell (Lotus) spun out with 18 laps to go. As a result, he took the title by just half a point from McLaren team-mate Alain Prost, who won the race.

Picture above: Nelson Piquet, in his Brabham-BMW, is the first one to congratulate Niki Lauda (McLaren-TAG) for his third World Drivers’ title, seconds after crossing the finishing line.

A few years later, the two triple champions met again, and shared good memories (picture below). Nelson Piquet, never hid his great admiration for the Austrian champion.
