Daytona in 6 hours
The second round of the 1972 World Championship of Makes at Daytona had been reduced to a 10am-4pm sprint by circuit boss Bill France Jr in line with the governing body (FIA) desire to keep sports car races – with the exception of Le Mans, of course – to a maximum of six hours.
Ferrari entered three prototypes 312PB for these Daytona 6 Hours for an unchanged driver line-up. Ronnie Peterson and Tim Schenken in the #6, Clay Regazzoni and Brian Redman in the #4, and local hero Mario Andretti and Jacky Ickx sharing the #2.
The 312PB’s only real competition would again come from the three Autodelta-run works Alfa Romeo T33’s driven by the very capable Vic Elford/Helmut Marko, Andrea de Adamich/ Nanni Galli and Peter Revson/Rolf Stommelen.
Nobody could stop Jacky Ickx in the race (picture here-under). His team-mate Andretti, starting from pole, had been delayed early on by a misfire, but the quick Belgian came back from nowhere to take a popular victory.
