A.J. Foyt rolls out of the Old Gasoline Alley, to practice for the 1963 Indianapolis 500 (picture above). The American qualifies in eighth and finishes the race in third. His time will come, and he will win the famous race, a record four times.
The 47th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, on 30 May 1963. Rufus Parnell Jones, also known as “Parnelli Jones”, took his only Indy 500 win, after starting from pole position.
Second was Scot Jim Clark in a Lotus-Ford (picture below), who later that year, will become Formula One Drivers’ champion, for the first time.
Jim Clark will win the Indianapolis 500 two years later, in 1965, in a Lotus 38-Ford, the same year he will become F1 World Champion for the second time.
