The Italian Formula One Grand Prix was held at Monza, on 7 September 1958. It was race 10 of 11 in the 1958 World Championship of Drivers and for Formula One Manufacturers.

Picture above: American Phil Hill, one of four Scuderia Ferrari drivers, seemed confident ahead of practice, although he suspected that the Vanwall cars, so streamlined, were going to be formidable on this fast circuit of Monza.

Qualifying proved him right with Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks in the two leading Vanwalls taking first and second. Mike Hawthorn was the first of the Ferrari drivers in third. Stuart Lewis-Evans took fourth, confirming the domination of the British marque. Hill qualified in seventh.

After Moss was forced to retire with a broken gearbox, Tony Brooks (Vanwall) took a convincing victory ahead of the two Ferraris of Hawthorn and Hill.

Vanwall won the Constructors’ Championship with one race left to go, but Hawthorn (Ferrari), who was leading the Drivers’ Championship by 8 points on Moss, had the best chances in the Drivers’ Championship.
