Emerson supports Nelson
Emerson Fittipaldi came to support his compatriot Nelson Piquet, who’s ready to pounce at the wheel of his Brabham BT53-BMW, on the starting grid of the 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix (pictured above).
The 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix was held at the Jacarepaguá circuit, and was the first round of the Formula 1 World Championship. Elio de Angelis caused a surprise by taking pole position in his Lotus-Renault, while the young Brazilian Ayrton Senna made his debut in a Toleman-Hart (pictured below).
Reigning world champion Nelson Piquet started in seventh position, but was forced to retire on lap 32 with a broken engine. His teammate Teo Fabi retired exactly on the same lap with a broken turbo!
And it was Alain Prost who won at the wheel of his McLaren-TAG, thus affirming his desire to avenge the bad luck that deprived him of the 1983 title, while his teammate and main rival for the crown, Niki Lauda, had to retire due to electrical problems.
