Ensign was founded in 1973 by Morris (Mo) Nunn, who for ten seasons carried the team virtually on his own shoulders. Very often he took on the duties of team manager, designer and race engineer at the same time.
In 1977, Clay Regazzoni raced the Ensign N177, scoring just five points, with best finishes of fifth in Monza and in Watkins Glen. The car was a good, cost effective design, but scoring points, would always be difficult with such a small budget.
Picture above shows the Swiss driver trying hard on the street circuit of Long Beach, California. The race was won by Mario Andretti in the Lotus 78 (picture below) and Regazzoni had to retire the car on lap 57 with gearbox issues.
