By the smallest margin

The 1984 Formula One season became a duel between McLaren drivers Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. The Frenchman, chasing his first F1 title, was the fastest of the two, winning seven races to Lauda five, including the last two races of the season, but the Austrian eventually prevailed by half a point – the smallest margin in Formula One history.
Niki Lauda is seen here-above at full speed in the John Barnard- designed McLaren MP4/2-TAG Porsche that quickly became the class of the field.
It was Niki Lauda’s third world title, and his first since 1977. Prost was going to wait another season, before finally and very deservedly being crowned. McLaren comfortably won the Manufacturers’ Championship, their first since 1974.
