Ralf Schumacher reappeared yesterday in the paddock of Hockenheim, scene of the 2019 German Grand Prix. Being the younger brother of 7-time World Champion and racing legend Michael Schumacher, it is easy to overlook Ralf’s own achievements.

Schumacher began karting at the age of three and achieved early success before making transition to car racing in German F3 first and then in the highly rated Formula Nippon series.

He moved up to Formula 1 with the Jordan Grand Prix Team in 1997 scoring a podium at Spa-Francorchamps. Schumacher then moved to the Williams F1 team in 1999, finishing 6th in the championship, won by Mika Hakkinen’s McLaren.

Ralf won his first Grand Prix in 2001, en route to fourth place in the Drivers’ championship, and subsequently won five more races over the course of two years. Ralf left Williams at the end of 2004 and joined Toyota in 2005. He was then one of the highest paid drivers of the paddock. However, his performance throughout 2006 and 2007 were disappointing, and Schumacher left F1 to join the DTM series.

His F1 statistics: 6 wins – 27 podiums – 6 pole positions – 329 points.
