On Swiss paving
Three Alfa Romeos share the front row on the starting grid of the 1950 Swiss Grand Prix held at Bremgarten near Bern (notice the paving). From left to right, picture-above: Luigi Fagioli #12, Nino Farina #16 and Juan Manuel Fangio, on pole position in the #14 (see picture below).
The fourth round of the F1 World Championship took place just three weeks after the series began at Silverstone (with Monaco and Indianapolis having taken place on consecutive weekends).
Once again the event proved to be a battle between the Alfa Romeo factory 158s of Farina, Fangio and Fagioli and the Scuderia Ferraris of Alberto Ascari, Luigi Villoresi, Raymond Sommer and Peter Whitehead.
Fangio led early on but Farina went ahead through a faster refuelling stop. The Argentinian retired on lap 33 with electrical problems and Farina (Alfa Romeo 158) won, becoming the first driver to win multiple Grand Prix, after winning the inaugural race at Silverstone.
