In December 1961, South Africa was visited for the first time by the Formula 1, with a “Springbok” Winter Series of 4 Grand Prix, that did not count for the world championship.

We are (here-above) at the start of the Natal GP at Westmead and as star competitors we have the Lotus of Jim Clark (in pole position, on the right) and Trevor Taylor sandwiching the Porsches of Jo Bonnier on the first row, and his team mate Edgar Barth, right behind on the second row.

Clark (picture-below) will dominate the series with victories at Kyalami, Natal and East London, leaving only one victory to Taylor, at the Cape Grand Prix, run at Killarney on the 2nd of Jan 1962.
