Candy for Uncle Ken
The Tyrrell 009 was a Formula One racing car that was designed by Maurice Philippe for Tyrrell Racing for the 1979 season. Candy Appliances joined the team as title sponsor.
The 009, greatly inspired by the all conquering Lotus 79, had an all aluminium monocoque and was powered by the Ford-Cosworth DFV V8 engine. Uncle Ken’s (Tyrrell) drivers were French drivers Didier Pironi (picture above) and Jean-Pierre Jarier. Englishman Geoff Lees replaced Jarier at the German Grand Prix and Irishman Derek Daly at the Austrian Grand Prix.
The team finished 5th in the Constructors’ standings thanks to 4 podiums achieved by their excellent French drivers, two for Pironi (Belgium and USA) and two for Jarier (South-Africa and Great-Britain).
