Marlboro, for the first time
Xavier Perrot, above at the wheel of the March 701 that belonged to Jo Siffert who raced it in F1 in 1970, during the Jochen Rindt Memorial, a non-championship event organised in homage to the late Austrian champion, who tragically died during practice for the 1970 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Note the Marlboro stickers on Perrot’s March, as this is the first appearance of the American cigarette company in Formula 1, a brand that will soon be present on BRMs, McLarens, Ferraris… for decades and on countless drivers’ suits and helmets!
Xavier Perrot (1932-2008) was a Swiss racing driver and garage owner, who raced in F2 driving a Brabham, and who won the 1972 European Hill Climb Championship. Here at Hockenheim, he will finish 11th, 4 laps behind the winner Jacky Ickx in a Ferrari.
