Surer flies
Marc Surer, driving his March 792-BMW, entered by the Polifac BMW Junior Team, literally flies (photo above) towards victory during the Nürburgring round counting for the 1979 European Formula 2 championship, which he will also win.
March, champion in 1978 with Giacomelli, entered no fewer than seven new ground-effect 792s, powered by BMW Rosche 4-cylinder engines and fitted with Goodyear tires.
Marc Surer, runner-up in 1978, started as the favorite, but he knew victory was far from guaranteed, as his teammates in the factory team included Beppe Gabbiani, Ricardo Zunino, Miguel Angel Guerra, and Teo Fabi.
Here at the Nürburgring, the fourth round of the season, Marc Surer takes a fine victory, after taking the risky gamble of starting on slicks when half of the 22-kilometer circuit is still wet at the start.
The Swiss driver has a tough battle with Keke Rosberg, who is approaching the track record, before a stuck throttle cable sends his ICI-liveried March 792 off the track.
