John Miles (1943-2018): a good racing driver and engineer, and later a musician, an actor and a theatre manager, is reading the news (picture-above) ahead of the 1970 South African Formula 1 Grand Prix held at Kyalami, where he will finish in fifth, scoring two world championship points.

Miles had driven that day most of the race with his Lotus 49-Ford petrol-leaking over him, but his boss Colin Chapman, quite severe with his young driver, expressed dissatisfaction he had not taken Beltoise’s Matra for fourth.

This was race saw the Formula One World Championship debut for British constructor March. It also was their first pole position and complete front row (Stewart ahead of Amon), while victory went to Jack Brabham (Brabham) ahead of Denny Hulme (McLaren) and Jackie Stewart, who in his March 701-Ford, offered its first podium to the young constructor.
