The facts: On lap 48, under pressure from Hamilton, the leader Vettel makes a mistake at turn 3 and overshoots the chicane. Coming back on the track, he (most probably) unwillingly cuts the path of Hamilton who has to break and put 4 wheels on the grass in order to avoid collision.
The rules are very clear: in this case, and it happened many times in the past, a 5 seconds penalty is applied. Pushing someone off the track, gaining an advantage (in this case not losing the lead after a mistake).
So my first conclusion is: I don’t believe the stewards should be blamed for applying the rules.
The feeling: Well, as a race fan, I’d love to see them race wheel to wheel, I’d love to see battles like Arnoux and Villeneuve in Dijon 1979, and I’d like sanctions to be applied for dangerous driving only.
But it’s a tough judgement to make and yes Vettel would have deserved to win, I understand it must be a tough pill to swallow for him and for the Scuderia.
